2009 marks the centennial for two historically important events which have influenced Canada and the world.

In 1909, one of the world's most ancient marine ecosystem discoveries was made in Canada. The 505 million year old Burgess Shale fossils were discovered in Yoho National Park. This United Nations World Heritage site is a treasure of exquisitely preserved soft-bodied animals. The Burgess Shale continues to generate wonder and contributes to our understanding of life's evolution on our planet.

That same year, an historical hostelling movement started in Germany and forged its way to Canada with the help of two sisters from Calgary, Alberta. The International Youth Hostelling Federation (IYHF) has since formed its own unique microcosm in the world of travel, through its endeavors to help all, especially the young, form a greater understanding of peoples, places and cultures. 2009 marks the 100th Anniversary of Hostelling.

To mark these Centennial milestones, Hostelling International and Parks Canada have come together to celebrate two influential moments in Canadian and world heritage. Together they are offering a unique package opportunity, Finding Fossils. Explore the Burgess Shale and Hostelling International-Canada through this partnership.

Both of these hikes are quite strenuous and a good level of phyisical fitness is required to enjoy the experience.
