Surrey - British Columbia

Surrey has over 400,000 people, and is one if the fastest growing major cities in Canada. These people live in one of six town centres: Fleetwood, Whalley/City Centre, Guildford, Newton, Cloverdale, and South Surrey. With more than 600 natural areas including parks, greenbelts, bird watching, nature walks and over 210 km of bike trails, you can easily understand why Surrey is known as the "City of Parks."

The city was named in 1879 when an Englishman was standing in New Westminster and looked across the water and the land reminded him of his hometown so he named it Surrey. At that point Surrey only had a municipality status. It wasn't until 1993 that it officially became a city.

In the mid 1980s, before Surrey was made a city, the municipality was made the eastern terminus for the Expo SkyTrain line. Today, there are 4 SkyTrain stations in Surrey and it is only about 35 minutes to the downtown core on the train.

The SkyTrain helps being people to the many community events that take place in Surrey every year. One of them, in the Cloverdale area, is the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair at the Cloverdadle Fairgrounds. This rodeo, the third largest in Canada, attracts some of North America's top cowboys. This is a family event with over 150 acres of agricultural/horticultural exhibits, parades, stage shows, and interactive contests and activities.

If you have another free afternoon, check out the Bose Corn Maze. Guests must try to navigate through a maze cut from 8 feet tall corn stocks. The maze can take anywhere from 1-2 hours depending on how well your navigation skills are. You can even make a day of it and have a picnic in the courtyard afterwards while your children play in the shaded sandbox, swings, and their very own mini-corn maze.

When your children are ready for school, they have 120 in the city to choose from. Surrey is the largest public school district in all of BC with over 120 elementary and secondary schools. There are over 63,000 students in public or private schools in the city.
