The Building
The Vancouver Art Gallery is the largest in western Canada . It is also one of the most beautiful and recognizable buildings in the city. Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver , it is a mecca for locals. The front of the building faces onto West Georgia street before a sprawling lawn. The back of the building faces Robson street and a sign reading "Placed on the Horizon (Casting Shadows). In the summer many locals can be found picnicking on the front steps or lawn, and various artists and entertainers on the Robson street side.
Vancouver Art GalleryCafé / Restaurant
The actual entrance to the VAG is on the Hornby street side of the building. Inside, the beauty and magnificence of the building continue through glass walls and marble floors. If you have time, I highly recommend stopping into the Gallery cafe/restaurant . This includes a lovely patio full of beautiful plant-life and extraordinary views of the city. It's the perfect place to go for lunch or grab a cup of coffee. (Note: you don't need to pay for gallery entrance to go to the café.)
Family Events
On the third Sunday of each month, the VAG hosts a drop in children and families program between noon and five pm . The program involves learning about art and includes hands on activities.
Exhibits
The gallery boasts an impressive variety of exhibits, special events and public programs. One the mainstays of the VAG is the Emily Carr exhibit, which is permanent. Emily Carr is one of Canada 's premiere artists. The gallery has over 200 of Ms. Carr's works, and it is an impressive and highly important collection. If you have any interest in Aboriginal culture, Canadian history or art, this is a collection that you must see.
The gallery also has a strong collection of contemporary visual art as well, in particular an excellent photo collection. It is also the location of various public art exhibits out of doors. In addition to the various permanent works at the gallery, a variety of exhibits also spend time at the VAG. This is a gallery that is known for its unique and interesting exhibits. There is always something new and amazing to see.
