Ecotourism in Northwest Territories

The Northwest Territories face a unique challenge. With extreme temperatures dipping well below zero degrees in the long winter months, and a culture that traditionally relies on its land for life, the province is well aware of the fragility of its environment, and the large amount of greenhouse gas emissions it produces in order to heat its communities. The government, aboriginal groups and environmental organizations developed the NWT Greenhouse Gas Strategy, in response to their delicate situation. The strategy outlines the damage high emissions will cause, including changes to the permafrost, challenges for arctic wildlife and vegetation, flooding of coastal communities, and forest fires.
