Sustainability in Northwest Territories

The plan is to develop hydro resources, including mini-hydro-electric plants to service the small isolated communities of Whati and Lutselk’e. There will also be an implementation of an Energy Efficiency Financing Program that supports residents in making energy-saving investments in their homes, appliances and vehicles, and the utilization of residual heating systems to heat public buildings.

In January 2008, the Northwest Territories government released a plan stating its intention tol choose a community later in the year to pilot a wind farm project. that will hopefully replace the diesel which currently powers most of the communities . Tuktoyaktuk is hoping to win the bid, since it is located in one of the territory’s windiest regions.
