How to get to Churchill

Churchill is accessible by air and rail. There are no roads to Churchill and the air and rail service can be unpredictable due to the weather in the region.

By road, access to Churchill is best achieved by driving or taking the Grey Goose Bus Lines bus to Thompson - this is about an 8-9 hour drive from Winnipeg. From there you can connect with the overnight train to Churchill.

Train travel is operated by VIA Rail and runs 3 days per week. The trip takes 36-38 hours but delays are a regular occurrence. For trips during Polar Bear season (October and November) book well in advance. If you are travelling in Comfort Class (economy) it is advisable to bring a pillow and blanket, ear plugs and bottled water along with something to keep you entertained. Every seat on the train has a power outlet and free drinking water is provided but may run out. Food is provided onboard at a reasonable price but bringing your own snacks is a good idea.

Calm Air and Kivalliq Air operate routes from Winnipeg. Kivalliq Air also operates routes into Nunavut. Air Canada, Westjet and some international airlines fly into Winnipeg however if you plan to fly to Churchill be advised that the Churchill bound aircraft leave from a different part of Winnipeg airport and require a 10 minute taxi ride to get there.
