The large island part of Nova Scotia to the northeast known as Cape Breton Island is the roughest, highest, and most remote area in the whole province. The rocky shores surround the lakes, rivers, forests and valleys of the interior. Cape Breton Highlands National Park is a truly impressive spot on the northern tip of the Island.
The huge Bras d'Or Lake is a sight to be seen along with the historic town at Louisbourg. The Cabot Trail links the Highlands to the Trans Canada Highway and most of the settlements on the north and west of the island. Sydney is the only city on the island and the town of North Sydney connected by bus provides the Marine Atlantic Ferry to Newfoundland.
