Charlottetown's Jack Frost Children's Winterfest

By Wendy Bradley Reynolds   Trail Canada

Jack Frost…that elfish character, who is said to leave crystal patterns on windows on cold days, is the perfect celebrity to lend his name to Prince Edward Island’s third annual winter festival. This event, the Jack Frost Children's WinterFest, kicks into gear on February 16-18, 2007. As the largest winter festival east of Quebec City, the celebration attracts Islanders and visitors to the capital city in droves, for what has proven to be a delightful, fun-filled time. This year will be no exception, with new venues promising even more adventures for all age groups.

Aliant Snow Kingdom

Joining Jack this year, in honour of the 50th Anniversary of The Cat in the Hat, is the imagination of Dr. Seuss, himself! The Canadian Snow Sculpting Team will recreate Charlottetown’s Victoria Park into Seussville, a village based on the wacky locales of Dr. Seuss’ books, using 70 tons of compacted snow! Completing this Snow Kingdom is the TechnoMedia Snow Maze, with over 700 feet of walls, and the Cat Sled Ride where one can ride a150 foot long sled run! Be sure to observe the snow and ice sculpting demonstrations leading up to the Atlantic Snow Sculpting Championship, where you get to vote for your favourite team. Also, do not miss the chance to ride around Seussville in one of the horse and sleigh rides.

Fire by Night

A breathtaking pyrotechnic performance by Circus Orange has been created exclusively for this event. The combination of fire, theatre, stunts, dance, music, fireworks and circus arts is performed live. This show will definitely be one of this year’s highlights!

Pepsi Live Outdoor Stage

Featured performers include: The Backyardigans, BATMAN™ Heroes among Us, and The Wanted Man – Ultimate Tribute to Johnny Cash. A very special Saturday night performance by Canadian Idol winner, Eva Avila, is certain to entertain, as she makes Charlottetown the first Atlantic Canadian stop on her début tour.

Lego Town and the CIBC Indoor Playground

For a chance to warm up those toes, be sure to take part in the indoor events of the Jack Frost Children’s Winterfest. Lego blocks never lose their appeal, and the display at Lego Town will be an amazing learning experience, as secrets to the great creations are revealed. Participate in interactive contests and building demonstrations.

The CIBC Indoor Playground provides the best in inflatable attractions and carnival rides for all ages. Other interactive games add to this fun zone.

Ice Quest 2007

What would a winter carnival be without figure skating? Have no fear, performances by P.E.I.’s best skaters promise to be a sensory delight. The Synchronized Skating Team and other special guests work their magic to transport us out of the ordinary, and into true winter wonder.

Get your tickets today-don’t delay! The Jack Frost Jacket Tag is required for all events in the Festival, and can be purchased in advance for $14 plus tax per person.
