The mouse-like lemming can be found in treeless areas of northern Canada. Lemmings have a life cycle which peaks every 4 years (known as a lemming year). The reason for the peak in lemming population and then sudden decline is not known but is probably linked to the over eating of their food source and the subsequent increase in animals which prey on lemmings.
